      I've been without an Analog subscription for awhile, but starting up again and reading this reminded me how hit or miss it can be for me compared to the other SF/Fantasy short story outlets. It's fitting that this issue begins with an editorial titled "On genre" discussing that different people appreciate different types of stories even within 'genre'.       This was a pretty good issue, one I really enjoyed. I think the theme was "old-fashioned science fiction", with straightforward plots and generally direct narrations."Lune Bleue" & "Sixteen Million League from Versailles" are a pair of decent, old-fashioned space opera. "Fear of Heights in the Tower of Babel" was a traditional earth-based story in the tradition of Asimov's robot stories. "Conscientious Objectors" was a futuristic bio-engineering story, "Following Jules" a cyber-assisted love [...]

      3.5 starsStandouts were Putting down roots, Sixteen million leagues from Versailles. Strong efforts from Following Jules, Conscientious Objectors, and Fear of Heights from the Tower of Babel.

      I read the novellette "Six Thousand Leagues from Versailles" by Steele and the novella "Leune Blue" by Johnston, my first of hers. I liked them both.
