Jenna’s Journey by Julie RyanReviewed by Lucy PireelAfter reading this book twice I still was puzzled how a writer can create such real-life characters and set such great scenery while at the same time have me scratching my head for all the inconsistencies throughout the book. There’s unexplained time lapses, unexplained acts by characters, sudden plot twists that have nothing to do with the story. I mean to plug a hole a sudden ghost pops up, another strange thing is the remark that a certai [...]

When Jenna takes herself off to Greece the last thing she expects is to become embroiled in an old murder case and artefact smuggling. Not usually one to read mysteries, I really enjoyed Jenna's Journey. I loved the setting, which the author drew perfectly and I really liked the way the book is split into three parts, enabling me to better appreciate the unfolding love story as much as I did the mystery. And I especially like the way each character (however minor they might first seem) is clever [...]

The unique setting drew me to this book initially, I loved the idea of reading a mystery set in Greece. The author's writing, to me, read almost like this was a women's fiction novel, as much as it did a cozy mystery. The plot was intriguing, as were the characters, and I'd be very interested in reading a second book in the series.

I was lucky enough to win this book in a competition & boy was I lucky from the start the storyline shines through. Jenna is in a not all that happy marriage, she loves Greg but she so badly wants to have a baby but it seems Greg isn't as keen & wants to stay how they are, him working & going out with his friends, Jenna in her teaching jobs with her circle of friends but rarely if ever do they meet each other's friends. Greg knows the names of a couple if her friends but think if you [...]

I received a free ecopy of this book for an honest review. This is a difficult book to review because it has some really good elements, some not so good, and some I still haven’t decided on.After 5 years, Jenna decides on the spur of the moment that she needs to get away from her husband, Greg, for a while to think after she realizes that he doesn’t want children. She goes to Greece without telling anyone where she is going, and she has quite an adventure, including romance and being followed [...]

After Jenna has an argument with her husband Greg, she flees to a Greek island hoping to be able to think about how she wants her life to continue and to hopefully start writing the novel for which she has so many ideas flowing around in her head. Once she arrives in Greece, matters get a lot more complicated. Will she return to England or will the Greek island steal her heart?I must admit that I didn’t read the blurb for this book, but straight away delved into the storyline not knowing anyth [...]

Julie Ryan truly has a gift for descriptive writing and I loved reading how she wrote about Greece, the islands and the people. She made those things really come alive and made me think she must have been a travel writer in another life. I enjoyed Jenna and the other characters very much. They were well rounded and made me want to see them find happiness in their lives. I was pulled into the story right away and thought I'd probably run off somewhere if I was married to someone like Jenna was.I [...]

An Island adventure in a beautifully settingI was lucky enough to read an advance review copy of Jenna's Journey, author Julie Ryan's debut novel. This adventure takes place in Greece and there are twists and turns you will not expect. Jenna unexpectedly runs away from her life with Greg, but it's not until 25 years later that we discover exactly what happened to her, when her daughter Allie follows in her footsteps. It's an idyllic setting for the story that unfolds. There is mystery, there is [...]

"Jenna's Journey" has an intricate plot that is nicely woven together. The problem is the first twenty percent of this novel was difficult to get through. There was too much talk about the relationship between Jen and her husband. I got the picture after a brief discussion. Some was need to develop their characters, but there were paragraphs and paragraphs of it. This took away from the mystery and intrigue that had been introduced. Despite that and some rough transitions, a bit of head hopping, [...]

When Jenna decides on a whim to go to Greece, she's trying to escape her failing marriage. Will Greg let her go so easily though? Can she make a new future for herself and how did she get involved in an antiques smuggling ring? Is fellow holidaymaker Tom all he seems and will it be happy ever after with Nikos? It's not until twenty-five years later that some of the questions are finally answered. *******I enjoyed reading the book very much. It started as a promise of a journey to remember and it [...]

While there she finds(herself) twisted into an antiques smuggling ring, falls for a native named Nikos, and has major life altering decisions to make.I liked Jenna, as a young woman the problem she faces are real. This is the second book I’ve read by Julie Ryan. The first was the 3rd in the series, Pandora’s Prophecy. Usually, I like to read a series in order but in this case, I think it was helpful reading the books out of sequence. Julie’s description of the settings in the Greek Islands was so vivid, I could imagine myself being right there having everything unfolding around me. The love story and mystery were skillfully interwoven with the physical setting making it an enjoyable read. Now I can [...]

Very enjoyable book although seemed to take me a while to get to grips with all the characters in it and how any of them were linked up. As I continued reading, more of it made sense and it started to have that un-put-downable quality to it.Was a bit surprised with the going back and forth in time with very few indicators as even which year we were still in would have helped, even as a chapter subheading.I'm curious enough about the author and my love of Greece is strong enough that I would defi [...]

    • Samantha March says:

I really enjoyed the beginning of the book, and thought that it started off very fast-paced and hooked me quickly. The scenery is amazing and so descriptive, and there is a little mystery thrown in here as well, which I really enjoyed. The ending threw me a little bit with the "choose your own ending" vibe, and made me feel a little unsettled, like I didn't actually know how the novel ended, but overall, one that I really enjoyed.

    • Hannah Symonds says:

This story had plenty of twists and turns, it did dart around a bit from place to place and character to character but I could not guess what was going to happen next. It is a slow paced book but with lots of description which I enjoyed. This is a must for those of you that love a romantic story set in a beautiful country. It made me want to go on holiday to Greece.

    • Roni Guzman says:

3.5 Stars out of 5This was a very different book. I wasn't expecting it to be the way it was. There were so many twists and turns that I will admit confused me at times but all in all it is a good book. I love how Greece was where it took place.

I picked this thinking it would be a quick lite read and it wasn't. I love Sara Alexi's books and thought a Greek Island Mystery sounded promising. I've given it 2 stars because I did manage to finish it. The author has promise with some really good, descriptive passages. But the storyline and structure are all over the place. She spends pages writing about some things that add nothing to the story. Then my goodness wh jumps ahead and ends the book only to go back and write an alternate ending. [...]

A nice story and I did in fact enjoy the read. However On occasions I found the time lapse somewhat difficult to understand. E.g. Comments would be made which suggested Jenna had been there forsome time but in fact had only arrived a few days before. These inconsistencies were somewhat annoying and perhaps a good editor would have sorted them out. I also fail to understand the two alternative endings. Very strange. Anyway read for yourself.

Jenna’s JourneyJenna’s Journey (A Greek Island Mystery #1), by Julie Ryan, first intrigued my interest when it spoke of a disgruntled and unhappy Jenna fleeing from foggy England, to sunny Greece. As she enjoys her vacation tour, she is accidentally mistaken as a mule for an antiquity smuggling ring, and finds herself at the top of the ruthless leader’s hit list. As Jenna unknowingly walks down a path of danger she becomes the object of two men’s attention: the handsome, Greek, Nikos and [...]

I've never really read much fiction regarding it though, so this was a unique experience for me. With regard to the setting, the book did not disappoint. I found myself longing even more for a chance to visit, just not with the coincidences that Jenna seems to find herself involved in. Julie Ryan writes [...]

3.5/5Beautifully written, I was confused by the end. It made me try to analyze Part 2 of the storyline. We begin with a present day glimpse into the first day of Jenna's daughter's journey in Greece and then dive right into Jenna's during the 80s. Each chapter is dated, so you're not lost and it doesn't go back and forth between past and present. The build up for suspense and mystery seemed slow paced for me, but Ryan's writing brings depth to Greece and to Jenna herself. I felt myself there with [...]

When Jenna and Greg reach a crisis point in their marriage, Jenna distances herself by taking a last minute trip to Greece. Looking for a quiet time to think and plan her future, Jenna actually finds herself in the midst of romance, mystery, and a smattering of the supernatural. Ultimately, Jenna’s journey is far more complex than she ever thought it would be.Part romance, part cosy mystery, there are many dimensions to this story. The romance is pure holiday ‘feel good’ reading (that’s [...]
